meanwhile, new york state is expected to pass the most restrictive gun law in the nation later today. it includes tighter restrictions on assault weapons and ammunition. susan mcginnis is in washington this morning with more. good to see you. good morning. >> reporter: terrell, good morning. the president facing a lot of opposition here on capitol hill is now looking at 19 steps he can take to curb gun violence with no congressional approval. the white house believes that acting fast gives it the best chance of success with the wounds from the connecticut school shooting still so wide open. meanwhile, parents of the children killed there are coming together. president obama says he's putting together his plan to reduce gun violence. >> members of congress i think are going to have to have a debate and examine their own conscience. >> reporter: the president's plan will be based on recommendations from vice president joe biden's task force. likely proposals include mental health background checks, longer prison sentences for gun traffickers, and more information on violent video games.
